Mathematics

We offer a comprehensive and creative mathematics curriculum. Our intention is both to inspire students to study maths as a discipline but also to understand the fundamental role that mathematics plays in mastering their chosen specialism.  We have structured our curriculum not just to alleviate any issues that may arise from changing school in year 9 but also to see this as an opportunity to dig deeper into subjects that students may not have had a firm grasp on in the past.

Our curriculum will give students the opportunity to:

  • Gain mastery understanding of key concepts in mathematics and understand how this contributes to our ability to solve problems
  • Move confidently from the general to the specific and vice versa when using mathematical concepts to solve problems
  • Use their newly acquired knowledge to tackle problems both at and above their current level of working
  • Understand the importance of both written and oral communication and develop their mathematical communication skills
  • Gain extra or supplementary qualifications additional to GCSE mathematics
  • Enrich their experience of mathematics through challenges/trips/competitions

In short, we want students to experience the joy that mathematics can bring and to help them develop a deep understanding and life long love of the subject.

Why a STEM education?

The word STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM subjects are important as not only do they pervade every part of our lives but is also a hugely exciting area, offering the chance for individuals to continue changing and developing the world we live in. At it’s very core, a STEM education is about a young individuals ability to make a meaningful connection between school, community and global issues.

  • Science is everywhere. Studying science provides a better understanding of the world around us and continues to help shape the modern world we live in
  • Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. It makes the world run efficiently and serves a variety of purposes to different people
  • Engineering covers a wide range of disciplines and helps to find solutions for everyday problems. As the world continues to change, engineers are usually found at the forefront of much of these developments
  • Mathematics is used on a daily basis, far more often then you may realise! Maths helps us to think analytically and have better reasoning abilities
